Demand A 'Fare' Go For International Students

Travel Concessions for International Students

In 1989, the NSW Government withdrew access to public transport travel concessions from International students. Since that time, student organisations including WUSA, individual students and other organsations have lobbied, requested and petitioned the Government to change this discriminatory practice through letters, submissions and petitions, as well as other public campaigns.

International full fee paying students are still not able to get transport concessions. The NSW Government has continually refused to reverse its policy.

In March 2006 the NSW Administrative Decisions Tribunal ruled that the Government had broken its own anti-discrimination laws.

Petition Message:

Dear Minister Gillard,

International students contribute $10billion annually to the Australian economy while studying at TAFEs, universities and other colleges. Yet these same students are denied travel concessions in NSW and Victoria - this in spite of a NSW Administrative Decisions Tribunal ruling in March 2006 that ordered the NSW government to grant concession travel on public buses, trains and ferries. What did the state government do? They changed the laws to allow them to continue to deny international students travel concessions. Help us redress this discriminatory law and grant concessions to these students.
