ATN: International Students - Meet local students in their own environment
Bringing the International Experience to Illawarra High Schools
This is a new project funded by the University via a Community Engagement Grant Scheme. The Project’s goal is to facilitate cross-cultural dialogue between international students and local youths in the Illawarra area. International students will be visiting local Illawarra high schools to deliver a series of presentations to high schools students and discuss various social and cultural issues. If you would like to become an international presenter at high schools and a cultural ambassador of your country and of University of Wollongong, and develop your public speaking and presenting skills, than apply for this volunteering position NOW.
Tasks and Selection Criteria for International Ambassador to High Schools
Tasks
• Help prepare presentations on the topics requested by participating high schools
• Deliver presentations on various cultural and social topics to Year 9-10 students at schools in the Illawarra region
• Answer students’ questions about your home country and your experience at the University of Wollongong
Essential Criteria
• You have to be an international student currently enrolled at UOW (any discipline, undergraduate or postgraduate), preferably you would have studied at the University at least for one session
• Excellent cross-cultural communication skills and ability to work in a team
Desirable Criteria
• Good public speaking skills
Hours of Voluntary Work
Voluntary work as an international ambassador/presenter will be spread across September, October and November of 2007, depending on the demand from schools and your availability and time table. This commitment might take up 5-10 hours of your time until the rest of the semester. All students who participated in this Project would receive official Certificate of Recognition and Employment Experience Certificate. This is a very valuable experience that would give you en excellent chance to exercise your public speaking and intercultural communications skills, so don’t miss out - apply NOW.
