Queer Space

The queer space can be found at 19.G039 [in the Arts building]. It is a place in which queer students can remove themselves from the heteronormative society we live in. This heteronormative society forces Queer students to engage in social institutions and social policies that all serve to reinforce the belief that heterosexuality is the only normal sexual orientation and that there are only two distinct gender categories, which are based solely on biological foundations. Homophobia is not just prejudiced views and attitudes; it is oppression, which is a system of discrimination that exists in many areas of society, including education.

The fact is, nobody looks twice at a straight couple holding hands in the street and most people aren’t affected by the constant bombardment of heterosexuality from newspapers, the TV and university lecturers. Queer students are affected. Queer students often face high levels of discrimination and vilification everyday, such that they are often made to feel as though they cannot express themselves in public for fear of taunts or even homophobic attacks.

This is why a queer space, in which queer students can be free from fear of discrimination and vilification, is essential, so that queer students can politically organise against homophobia in all its forms, access resources on sexuality and safe sex and socially interact with other queer students.

This queer space has been won for queer students by queer students, as a result of a long campaign resulting in an occupation last year that forced the university to provide the space. Queer students use your space and feel empowered in doing so!
